EPA Recognizes DIRECTV With 2012 ENERGY STAR® Award for Excellence in Energy-Efficient Product Design
For the Third Straight Year, DIRECTV Stands Alone Among TV Providers
Recognized by ENERGY STAR for Protecting the Environment
Through Energy Efficiency
EL SEGUNDO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is honoring DIRECTV with
its 2012 ENERGY STAR Award for Excellence in Energy-Efficient Product
Design for its commitment to advancing cutting edge energy efficiency in
products.
DIRECTV's accomplishments will be recognized at an awards ceremony in
Washington, D.C., on March 15, 2012, which marks the 20th
anniversary of ENERGY STAR.
An ENERGY STAR partner since 2009, DIRECTV has earned the award three
years in a row and is the only pay TV service to be honored by the EPA
for its commitment to energy efficiency.
As of the end of 2011, DIRECTV customers are enjoying digital television
entertainment services via 33 million ENERGY STAR qualified receivers,
with more than 2.2 million customers realizing even greater savings — 30
percent more, through DIRECTV's Whole-Home DVR solution — all
demonstrating DIRECTV's superior commitment to efficiency. With this
award, EPA is also recognizing DIRECTV's move towards receiver-less
options for consumers - offering customers a household of content with
one central High Definition DVR, eliminating the need for millions of
energy-using receivers. Over the past 20 years, American families and
businesses have saved nearly $230 billion on utility bills and prevented
greenhouse gas emissions equal to those from more than 350 million
vehicles with help from ENERGY STAR.
"Our customers understand that the ENERGY STAR label ensures that our
products deliver energy savings without sacrificing performance or
quality, and we are proud to deliver on that promise as an ENERGY STAR
partner," said Romulo Pontual, executive vice president and CTO for
DIRECTV. "Being chosen as a 2012 ENERGY STAR® AWARD winner is
a great accomplishment, and we will continue to look for new and
innovative ways of operating in an environmentally responsible and
conscious manner."
The 2012 Excellence in Energy-Efficient Product Design Award is given to
a variety of organizations to recognize their efforts to improve energy
efficiency and reduce pollution, resulting in significant cost savings.
Award winners are selected from about 20,000 organizations that
participate in the ENERGY STAR program.
"As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the ENERGY STAR
program, EPA is proud to recognize DIRECTV with the 2012 ENERGY STAR
Excellence in Energy-Efficient Product Design Award," said EPA
Administrator Lisa P. Jackson. "DIRECTV and all our ENERGY STAR award
winners truly demonstrate how the leadership and commitment from EPA's
partners has made a difference in the lives of Americans since 1992,
saving them billions of dollars in energy costs and improving the health
of our families, the planet and our future."
